What is SI_SCOPE?
| SI_SCOPE is a comprehensive
RS232 analyzer for the PC that is used
to debug, analyze, or document serial communications. With SI_SCOPE you can eliminate guess work and quickly diagnose problems by viewing RS232 data and signal changes in real-time from your PC.
SI_SCOPE transforms your PC into an RS232
analyzer without the need of expensive hardware or plug in boards. All that is required is a PC or laptop with two available serial ports running Windows
Vista, XP, 2000, ME, 98, or 95.
SI_SCOPE utilizes its own 32-bit kernel mode drivers, which are engineered for serial analysis, allowing it to
accurately capture and time stamp data from an RS232 line at baud rates up
to 921.6 Kbps.
SI_SCOPE can also operate as a serial spy. Spy
mode is a software only solution that allows you to view the data flow
between any Windows application and the operating systems serial driver.
When in serial spy mode SI_SCOPE gives you the ability to debug
internal ports and modems on Windows Vista, XP, and 2000 systems. |
 |
How does the RS232 Analyzer work?
In Async mode SI_SCOPE monitors your RS232 circuit at
the byte level by tapping the line with a specially wired passive cable. The communicating devices are connected to the 25 pin head of the passive cable, and the passive cables 9 pin leads are connected to the
two serial ports of the PC running
SI_SCOPE. The diagram to the right illustrates how the passive cable operates. When RS232 data is transmitted from one device to the other, the data is
passively routed into the
SI_SCOPE PC while being transmitted to the receiving device.
All RS232 data, error conditions, and signal changes are recorded and time
stamped at the interrupt level by SI_SCOPE'S device drivers. Similar
products that use the Windows communications API or a USB converter
sometimes display events out of sequence or fail to accurately measure the
time between recorded events. SI_SCOPE'S interrupt driven design
guarantees that the sequence of events is correctly displayed and the time
between the events is accurately measured.
SI_SCOPE requires two serial ports to display
bidirectional RS232 communications. SI_SCOPE can also
operate in single port mode to display one side of an RS232
link, operate in dumb terminal mode, or monitor a half duplex
RS485 link (requires the use of an RS485 <-> RS232 converter or
installation of an RS485 card).
SI_SCOPE's Async mode drivers support Windows Vista, XP, 2000,
NT, ME, 98, and 95. The installation program will detect the
target operating system and correctly install the proper kernel
mode driver.

 |
How does Spy mode work?
|
Spy mode is a software only solution that does not require
any special cabling or a dedicated port.
In spy mode SI_SCOPE's serial
spy driver will insert itself into the Windows driver stack and silently monitor
the packet level activity between a Windows program and the standard Windows serial driver.
Spy mode will work on any port enumerated by the Windows serial driver including
internal PCI modems and USB to RS232 converters. Spy mode is supported on
Windows Vista, XP, and 2000 systems. |
|
Is it easy to use?
Very easy! Unlike similar products with cryptic interfaces SI_SCOPE's
menu driven architecture requires little or no learning curve. You can be productive with
it right out of the box and refer to the manual as needed.

SI_SCOPE Feature List
- Async mode support for 32 bit versions of Windows
Vista, XP, 2000, NT, ME, 98,
and 95!
- Fully configurable UART parameters with support for user defined non standard baud
rates.
- Capture data in selectable formats including ASCII, EBCDIC, and HEX
- Built in breakout box allows real time monitoring of all DCE and DTE control signals.
Control signals can also be recorded to the data stream allowing you to analyze where and
when signal changes occur.
- Line status errors can optionally be recorded into the
data stream allowing you to see precisely which device generated the error and
when the error was detected.
- File Capture option allows RS232 analyzer session to be recorded to disk as it happens. Included
conversion program compiles data into a binary (record format included in documentation),
ASCII, or documented text file. ASCII format allows for user defined field delimiters for
easy integration into third party word processing and spread sheet programs.
- Capture file can be automatically archived by
SI_SCOPE at a user defined time each day to support environments where
SI_SCOPE is running in continuous unattended operation.
- Capture file can be saved and reloaded into SI_SCOPE
for review at a later time.
- Flexible trigger mechanism allows you to activate and deactivate data capture based on
incoming data streams (wildcards are supported!)
- Popup rulers, ASCII charts, and time cursors provide the tools you need to analyze
RS232 data
patterns.
- Search Engine can scan through captured data for any data pattern,
signal change, or line status error.
- Time stamps included on all captured data with a 1
millisecond resolution.
- Automatic detection and support for NS16550 UARTS.
- Supports any 2 user defined port addresses and any 2 irqs. Shared irq multi port cards
as well as PCMCIA devices are also supported.
- Built in support for USB <-> RS-232 converters. Click here for more details on USB support...
- Included Passive Cable allows for non intrusive bi-directional monitoring of all data
and control signals.
- Spy mode support for cable free operation under
32 bit Vista, Windows XP, and 2000.
- Supports half duplex RS485 communications and 9 bit
protocols when used with an RS485 converter.
- Comprehensive online manual included in both Windows Help and Adobe PDF format.
- When purchased with an optional Active Cable SI_SCOPE allows
controlled interaction with the serial line from the keyboard. Send data to one or more
devices while observing responses. Please note that the Active Cable is
optional. SI_SCOPE comes complete with a Passive Cable for bi-directional monitoring.
- SI_SCOPE's
programmable macros allow complicated data strings to be recorded and replayed at the
touch of a key.
Will SI_SCOPE work for me?
We guarantee it! If during the first 30 days you are not completely satisfied with SI_SCOPE
you can return it for a refund. So don't waste another minute trying to find where that
protocol bug is, get SI_SCOPE and get productive again!
